Build books with us.

We’re a small, deeply collaborative team of editors, designers, illustrators, and marketers who love their craft and respect the authors we work with.

Why Capitol Quill Press

Craft over churn.
People over process.

We hire slowly and treat the work like a craft. Our editors edit fewer books — and more thoughtfully — than at any agency or in-house imprint we’ve worked at. We pay above market, take month-long sabbaticals seriously, and never charge an author for a service we wouldn’t want done to our own manuscripts.

Competitive pay + profit-sharing on books we launch

Fully remote, with quarterly retreats in Washington, DC

Unlimited PTO (with a 4-week minimum)

$2,000 annual craft & conference budget

Two paid Fridays per month for your own writing

“I used to edit twenty-two books a year. At Capitol Quill Press I edit eight — and each one is better than anything I shipped before. The work is the work, again.”

— Elena Park, Senior Editor

What you’ll do

  • Lead developmental edits, line edits, and author calls on 6–8 titles per year
  • Write editorial letters that authors will actually want to read
  • Collaborate with our design team on jacket copy and pull quotes
  • Help shape the editorial taste of the agency

You’re a fit if you have

  • 5+ years editing books (in-house, agency, or trusted freelance)
  • A few titles you’d point to and say “this one is mine”
  • Range across at least two genres
  • An ear for voice and a backbone for honest feedback

Book Designer

Capitol Quill Press is looking for a freelance book designer to craft covers and interiors for professionally published titles. We want someone with a strong visual instinct, a working knowledge of print production, and the patience to walk first-time authors through what a great book actually looks like.

What you’ll do

  • Design covers and full interiors across a range of genres — fiction, narrative nonfiction, business, and memoir
  • Typeset manuscripts to a professional, readable, print-ready standard
  • Prepare files for Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and other major printers
  • Collaborate closely with editors, fellow designers, and indie authors throughout each project
  • Translate detailed design choices into plain language for clients who don’t “speak design”

You’re a fit if you have

  • A portfolio of professionally produced book covers and interiors across multiple genres
  • Strong typesetting chops — you understand grids, margins, leading, and how a page should feel in the hand
  • Hands-on experience preparing print-ready files for KDP and other major print-on-demand platforms
  • An ear for the editorial side — you can take notes from editors and authors and still own the design

The fine print

  • Minimum 3 years of professional book design experience — or principal designer on at least 6 published titles
  • Fully remote role
  • Paid per-project in CAD

To apply, email your résumé and a few portfolio samples to alexandra@capitolquill.com. No cover letter required. We’re accepting applications on a rolling basis until the role is filled.
